Hey, Falcons!

We know, it’s been QUITE a while since you’ve heard from us. Buuuut, we’re BACK! New school year, new posts ;)

Anywho, we hope your summer has been great! If you’re new to our community, then welcome to our Kestrel. For those of you who don’t know (and as a refresher for those of you who do), a kestrel is a group of Falcons, which is exactly what we are here at Silver Oak. We hope that this school year is filled with success, so good luck to you all!

We all know the most popular line on the first day of school, “How was your summer?” so we want to know: How was yours? Please feel free to email us at silveroak.kestrel@gmail.com with cool stories from your summer! We’d love to feature them in an upcoming article.

Our summers were busy, let me tell you that. Sophia and I have been loaded with work, work, SAT prep, college apps, and - you guessed it! - more work. We’ve got big plans for the Kestrel this year, so stay tuned for the action! Throughout all of this, Sophia and myself (as we took care of our ever important snapchat streaks and such) noticed LOTS of trends over social media.

Here’s a list of the top 5 social media fads we noticed most frequently over the summer:

Don’t @ us on this list, it’s nothing official folks!

1. Drake’s “In My Feelings” Challenge

  • As the world continuously wonders who “Kiki” is, everyone seems to be hopping out of cars and asking Kiki if she loves them with some serious and some not so serious choreo, all inspired by the comedian, Shiggy.

2. The “Zoom” Challenge

  • In time to the lyric “zoom” in Lil Yachty's “Mickey”, people film themselves zooming out of camera view as someone off camera yanking their legs. This trend had brought some concerns to the table regarding many, many videos where people snap their heads back and smack them on the ground as a result of being pulled too hard. Ouch.

3. Movies?

  • Oh. My. Goodness. Summer ‘18 was FULL of movies, we sure kicked it off right with Incredibles 2! From Mama Mia! Here We Go Again! to Crazy Rich Asians to awesome Netflix originals like To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, all of you romantics at heart for sure got misty eyed in theatres or at 2am under your covers this summer. Let’s be honest, probably both.

4. Ubers

  • I don’t know about you guys, but every single commercial this summer seemed to be about Uber being under new management. New safety features, more background checks, etc. I promise this is not an ad, but I’m sure you saw lots of those over break!

5. No More Straws?

  • Welp, find some reusable straws everyone. Starbucks is planning to be rid of all plastic straws by 2020! Thank you, Starbucks, for realizing the environmental call to reduce, waste! Aside from this coffee chain, many boba places are also considering leaving plastic straws in the dust. I wonder, would a stainless steel straw with a pointed edge be considered a weapon?

That’s our list of five folks! Were there any other crazy items of discussion not on this list that you guys heard about over the summer? Leave a comment or send us an email! We LOVE to hear from our peers.

Also, keep in mind that the Kestrel is an open student platform! If you have anything you’d like us to publish here, be it an article, poetry, digital art, etc, send us an email! Our goal this year is to get more contribution from our community, we’d love to see your byline on this blog!

Thanks for reading, Falcons!
